Over 60s 1st XI finish strongly

The O60 1sts completed their regional group programme with a win over a powerful Kent X1 at High Wycombe CC. Although Bucks will not qualify for the final stages of the competition, a third consecutive victory constitutes a strong revival after six of the first seven matches had ended in defeat.

Kent chose to bat first but were unable to get on top against the tight bowling of Denzil Owen and Chris Tucker who eventually dismissed the prolific Chris Swadkin for 25; Tucker bowled straight through for 1-34 off his 9 overs. Thereafter although Khan with 37 and Spelman with 34 threatened to build a significant total, Bucks’ three spinners Chris Johnson (3-38), Brooker (3-31) and Salmon (2-35) once again ripped the heart out of the middle order on a dry wicket, Owen returning to end with 1-22 off his 9 overs.
Kent opened with England bowler Rupert Staple but after Graham Keens’ early dismissal, John Rolfe and Roger Garrini built a partnership of 87 before Garrini was caught for 40 with the score on 100 and Rolfe fell six runs later for 49. Keith Wallis who had dropped down to No 4 for this innings, was joined by Owen who put on the remaining 62 runs required with two overs to spare against accurate bowling, ending with 27no and 25no respectively.
This win took Bucks above Berkshire and finished in fourth place of six and meant Kent dropped to third. Bucks will now enter the Plate competition, arrangements for which are awaited.
